Team Zephyr is invited to the 2022 CanSat Competition

Team Zephyr returned from Lethbridge, Alberta on May 1, 2022 with good news! The Canadian Satellite Design Challenge Management Society (CSDCMS) has selected Team Zephyr to represent Canada at the European Space Agency’s CanSat Competition in Italy this June.

The judges, as well as a representative from the Canadian Space Agency, were very impressed with the technical and scientific aspects of RotaSat (the mission name), their presentation quality, and outreach efforts. Team Zephyr will be traveling to Europe for the 5-day competition running from June 20th to the 25th. They will be competing against teams from 22 European Space Agency Member countries plus Latvia, Lithuania, and Slovenia. Many local newspapers and organizations have partnered with Team Zephyr to promote their mission as well as spread encouragement to youth and females in STEM. Unfortunately in Lethbridge, due to a combination of high winds, loss of visual tracking, GPS errors, and loss of telemetry at some points in flight, RotaSat was not recovered after the flight. This flight highlighted what worked and what didn’t.

The team is working hard to refine the design for June based on recorded telemetry data and feedback from judges. Teams were evaluated on reports, in-person presentations, and any kind of data recorded from the flight. As the team now moves forward, representing Canada at the ESA Competition, they are thankful for all the support received from sponsors, teachers, family, and friends, and hope future students can also follow their passions.
